So, you've signed up with Syft. Now what? In this article, we outline 5 steps to get started with Syft, pointing you to everything you need to know and all the features you should really check out. This guide will cover:

  1. All about Home - what is it and why it's useful

  2. How to add entities to Syft

  3. How to customize your P&L and Balance Sheet layouts and COA

  4. Tools to explore

  5. How to invite users

Let's get into it!

All about Home

Home s your headquarters on Syft. It is a central place that provides you with a birds-eye view of everything in Syft. Home includes an overview of your connections to Syft and entity details, as well as all the usual settings you'd expect to see.

Navigate to any entity by clicking on the name of the entity from your Overview screen.

If you hover your mouse next to the name of an entity, you will see that three dots appear. If you click on these three dots, you can configure your entity. This will take you to a Configure page, where you can edit certain fields for that entity.

If open the dropdown next to the entity name, you will see a list of users and their roles and email addresses that have access to that entity. You have the option to disconnect users from here, or to invite new users, or add existing users to this entity.

Add entities

Here's a quick, simple guide to add entities:

  • Click the “Add Entity” button on the top right of the screen

  • Select an integration or data source

  • You’ll be redirected to our partner to authorize Syft

💡 Pro tip

You can build consolidations on the entity setup page! Just choose consolidation as your data source and then select the entities to consolidation

Whether you're connecting a cloud accounting provider or importing data into Syft manually, you can supplement your financial data with non-financial data using Connections (you can set this up later).

Customize your P&L & Balance Sheet layouts and Chart of Accounts

An important step for any accounting, ERP, trial balance upload or transaction list upload is to configure the entity's layouts and COA. It's critical that you set up your layouts and COA correctly as this impacts every feature across Syft.

Head over to Configure in any entity. Edit your layout by creating a new layout according to your needs. Press the plus icon to get started. You can then:

  • Create a new layout based off an industry template

  • Import a layout from another entity

  • Start a layout from scratch

In the layout builder, drag and drop accounts to order them as you wish and create formats such as groups, categories and even groups of groups.

💡 Pro tip

To multi-select accounts, select an account, hold down Shift on your keyboard and then select another account. Every account between the two will be selected!

Tools to Explore

There are tons of tools to explore, these are the key sections and the tools contained in each:

  • Visualize: generate graphs and reports of your overview, profitability, customers, suppliers, cash, and items and see all your metrics in beautiful, customizable dashboards.

  • Financials: generate reports for your P&L, Balance Sheet, EBITDA, Cash Flow statements and KPIs.

  • Analyze: build customized ledgers, benchmark your organization, develop business valuations, assess your transaction list and analyze customers and products.

  • Forecast: build live forecasts to help manage your cash, project integrated future financials over the long term, and build budgets.

Invite Users

To add your team, invite users:

  • Click "Settings" at the top left of the screen and then "Users"

  • Either click “Invite User” to invite a user individually by email address or click “Import Users” to bulk import users from an Excel spreadsheet

  • Select the role you would like to assign this user

  • Select which entity you would like them to have access to

💡 Pro tip

While Syft has a set of standard user roles, you can also create your own custom roles under the “Internal rolls” sub-tab.
