Two-factor authentication (2FA) is an extra step added to the login process that helps verify your identity and prevent cybercriminals from accessing your personal information.

Research has found that up to 80% of data breaches could be prevented by activating two-factor authentication. As such, 2FA dramatically reduces the risk of unauthorized access to your Syft account. If your email and password were to be compromised, the unauthorized user would not be able to gain access without your 2FA code (which changes every few seconds).

💡 Pro tip

Another way to improve your security would be to use a strong, unique password that no one else knows. Try to use a different password for each account.

How to set up 2FA

To set up two-factor authentication, navigate to the settings menu (the arrow next to your profile icon). This will open a dialogue box with the settings menu.

Once you've opened the settings menu, navigate to "Preferences."

Here, you will see the "User Security" setting. Two-Factor Authentication is automatically set for all users, as of October 2024. However, if you need to reset it, you can click on the Reset button here or contact support.

How Two-Factor Authentication Works

Once you sign into your Syft account, there are three steps to complete to finalize 2FA:

  • Install an authenticator app (see options below)

  • Connect your app to Syft by scanning the barcode

  • Input your unique password from the authenticator app

💡 Pro tip

For the 2FA code to work, the time on your phone must be the same as the time on your computer.

Options for the authenticator app

An authenticator app allows you to generate one-time codes, which are used to verify your identity when signing in.

Download an authenticator app on your mobile phone, such as:
