How to upload a budget to Syft

If you are used to creating budgets in Excel, Syft's Excel Spreadsheet Link add-on allows you to transfer your budget from Excel to Syft with ease. Follow the steps below to upload and automate your budgets.

Build a budget skeleton on Syft

Firstly, create the skeleton for your budget within Syft. To do this, create a budget on Syft. This entails the usual steps of naming your budget, choosing the budgeting period and budget interval, deciding between a budget for the entire entity or specific divisions, and choosing what to populate your budget with - be that actuals or percentage increase on prior actuals.

📓 Note

This works exactly the same for the 4-Way Forecast as the Budget.

Update the budget using Spreadsheet Link

Once you have created your skeleton, navigate to Excel and log in to Spreadsheet Link. Then follow the following steps:

  1. Select "Upload data to Syft"

  2. You'll see you have the option for budgets or forecasts. Click on "Budgets" and then select the entity you created the budget in on Syft.

  3. Select the specific budget

  4. Select the report you want to upload values for (be that Profit & Loss, Balance Sheet, or Connections)

  5. Select "Generate template".

Your full budget will now pull through to Excel and you can add adjustments, insert new values, create formulas, etc. You can type this straight into the sheet.

💡 Pro tip

Exit your Syft budget while you work on Excel to avoid any potential issues.

Validate and upload

The final step in the process goes as follows:

  1. Click "Validate" to ensure your budget is in the correct format to be compatible with Syft. It should say "Validation successful" if everything is right.

2. Select "Upload". It'll tell you that your upload was successful.

3. Return to Syft and refresh the page to reflect all the updates.

Once you have refreshed the page on Syft or reopened it, you can go into the budget section and open the budget in question.

Then, all your changes will pull through and these will be highlighted for you in red or green, depending on their impact. You will also see an icon showing where you've added adjustments.
